Koper Slovenia = Unexpectedly Unique!

Slovenia isn’t as highly advertised online as a major European country that everyone should visit before they die, and I think that should change. Slovenia is beautiful, a bit off the beaten path and full of surprises at every corner. There is something different about this small coastal city along the Adriatic Sea.

There were quaint town squares where you least expect to find them, and the architecture had distinct Venetian influences. Unlike Venice where I was just the day before, the town squares were far from being overcrowded, and locals and tourists mingled together while strolling along cobbled streets and lanes. The squares were littered with pigeons and well-groomed horses pulled carriages across the area, reminding me that I was indeed in the Old World.

There is a fantastic bell tower in the center of Koper, and Jennifer and I could not resist climbing the seemingly hundred of stairs to get to the top. It was quite a bit of work, but after we burst through the door at the top, the resulting views were oh so worth it! You could see the red tiled roofs of the houses in the city for miles, and the startling blue of the Adriatic Sea in the distance. Words can’t properly describe it, so here’s photographic evidence:

Slovenia also had some great alcoholic beverages which we were lucky enough to indulge in. Bars were in abundance, and all you had to do was randomly pick one out of the bunch. The local Lasko beer was lovely and very affordable at under 3 Euros, and we had a glass of the local Fig wine. The burgundy wine was different to anything I have ever tasted, fruity, satisfyingly sweet but very potent.

Ahh Koper, you surprised me. I loved my short but lovely visit, and maybe next time I will return to visit Lake Bled!
